Don't be fooled by the lighthearted, cheerful labels the efforts in the vineyards and cellar at Jauma are far from halfhearted. 

Tucked in the town of Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills (Franco, are you listening?) in Southern Australia, James Erskine of Jauma (pronounced Yaow-Mah!) has quickly stepped into the spotlight for Natural Australian wines. James is a graduate in soil chemistry and a Sommelier turned winemaker. James's first vintage was only in 2010, but he's been well recognized since the 2000's for his past work as a Sommelier at Auge Restaurant in Adelaide.  He’s one of the pioneers of natural wine in the recent explosion of great younger, independent producers working in the Adelaide Hills, and his wines rank among some of the finest examples of a new Australia, one that doesn’t rely on weight, power, or opacity for beauty. 

Fruit here is always farmed organically, is always hand pruned and hand harvested. The vineyards are all dry farmed or being weaned off irrigation in the next few years. In the cellar, all of their wines are made without the addition of yeasts, polymers, tannins or filtration. Wine is moved by gravity, and there are no needs for added enzymes and acids. All of the vineyard blocks are grown on the hilly ranges of McLaren Vale, are hand harvested, farmed biodynamically, and bottled with minimal sulfites.

"Disco Special" is a special bottling made with  70% Shiraz, 30% Grenache. Direct pressed into stainless steel tanks and then blended for the final cuvée. The fruit from this wine comes from multiple vineyards across the McLaren Vale, in particular the ‘Ralph’s’ Shiraz vineyard when it is very productive. A cuveé that’s not made every year, but when it’s made, it’s a blend intended to be fun and easy. Roses, beach plums, bramble. It’s disco, medium bodied and slightly funky - not your dad’s Shiraz!!
