Ciro Picarelo is a rising star producer of Avellino.  He and his wife Rita started their tiny winery in 1997 high in the volcanic soils of in the villages of Montefredane and Summonte. Their ultimate focus is on bringing fame back to Fiano by achieving concentration of flavors: They harvest in late October (very late for white) which increases the ripening time, yields are kept very low through extensive training and pruning and a very severe selection ensures only the best grapes are included. Only the first press of the grapes is used in the DOCG Fiano.

Fiano is an ancient and age-worthy white grape which owes its origins to the Greeks, who brought the grape to Campania over 2000 years ago. It's name means 'beloved of bees, derives from the typical scent and sweetness of the fruit that attracts swarms of bees in the vineyards. It flourishes in Avellino thanks to its close proximity to the Apennine Mountains, its mild microclimate, diurnal temperature variations and mineral-rich, volcanic and calcareous soils. It was nearly wiped out post WWII due to the difficulty of farming it and with industrialization in the 70’s and 80’s over-production led to wines that were often tasteless and unbalanced, giving a bad name to the grape within Italy and slowing knowledge around the world.

The wine is vivid, with distinct aromas and flavors of almond, fresh herbs, lime, and an enticing smokey, flint character from volcanic soil. In the glass it's medium-bodied with green-apple acidity and great complexity.
