What began as a festive three-barrel foot stomp event attended by a handful of friends on a south peninsula beach in 1996, produced a very palatable Syrah, and saw the founding in 1997 of the first true micro-winery in the Western Cape with Pinot Noir the focus. Originally named Barefoot Wine Co after it's playful start, it quickly became a legendary institution in the Region. 

Catherine and the team spent the next 10 years scouring vineyards throughout the Western Cape before deciding to source all grapes from Elgin in order to focus on crafting a more fresh, bright and aromatic style of wine. Elgin's cool daytime climate and cold nights during the growing season make it perfectly suited to producing a Cape version of the famous German 'Mosel' style of Riesling.

After getting a degree from Elsenburg, Catherine spent almost a decade apprenticing at various local and international cellars (Burgundy, St-Emilion- Bordeaux, California  and Australia)and then as a winemaker at four wineries in Stellenbosch and Paarl before embarking on a solo career in 2007.   

She was instrumental in formalizing the Garagiste Movement, which has gone on to become very successful in South Africa. Her total commitment to detail and the hands-on approach in vineyards belies her long training and also her desire to understand the character of each vineyard and wine.

This wine exudes persistent aromas of zested lime, crisp pink apple, beeswax and wild honey. The fresh acidity is well balanced to the soft sweetness of the fruit and supported by mineral texture derived from local shale soils. There is a long, intense and somewhat sherbet like finish.
