Antica Tenuta Pietramore is a relitively new project from demonstrate Abruzzo’s potential for quality wine with a high level of expressiveness and the name reflects Maria’s love and respect for the soil. In 2011 Maria and Massimiliano started out renting the first vineyards before buying the entire 70 hectare estate in 2014. Due to their love of nature they work sustainably and have been certified organic and biodynamic since the start. The vineyards are nestled in a gorgeous area between the Maiella mountains and the Adriatic sea. The result is a unique microclimate very diverse soil. Maria works with indigenous varieties but adds personality to the wines through her creative side. The estate is planted to the principal grapes of the region: Montepulciano, Pecorino, and Trebbiano Abruzzese.
One of the historically famed Italian varieties that has only recently been rediscovered, Pecorino got its name from the sheep herders who used to eat the grapes while tending their flocks. It is a variety adapted to high altitude hillside vineyards with a long, cool growing season, and typically produces very full body wines, with plenty of acidity and delicate flavors.
The Pietramore Pecorino is an archetypal and benchmark example of how delicious these wines can be, it embraces the richness the grape is prone to. Loads of orchard fruit jump out with apple blossom, mint, and a cool mountain air quality. Full bodied but enlivened by racy acidity. In the glass there's Anjou pear and white melon with a touch of lanolin and bitter almond. Perfect with a pre-dinner cheese, roast chicken, or richer seafood dishes.
